Page description language used for communication with a printer to initiate commands. Its distinctive feature lies in the fact that the image and font information is calculated in the printer rather than in the computer. That way they can be scaled and manipulated otherwise. Postscript is device independent - all output devices equipped with a Postscript interpreter, like printers or typographs, can understand Postscript.

Because Postscript is device independent PC users have all the professional print fonts (Linotype, Agfa-Compugraphic, Monotype, Berthold and others) at their disposal. Postscript fonts can be displayed on monitors in any size using software such as Adobe TypeManager (WYSIWYG).

Almost all DTP programs can import and export graphics in Postscript format and exchange them between different platforms (Macintosh, PC). Therefore Postscript ist found everywhere professional lithographs are created.
